When did reference to the 3 wise monkeys become common usage in English?

Very good question. The three monkeys originate from Japan, a country that has been a closed society up to approx. 1850. I have never been able to find any trace of the three monkeys in any other country from before that date. The saying “hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil” or variations thereof is much older. The Freemasonry has been using the saying Audi, Vidi, Tace and there is a saying in Yorkshire: hear all, see all and say nowt. Sometimes such sayings have been connected with the 3 monkeys. This is only a short answer to a more complex matter. If you want to know more about it, I can recommend you the following book: Nichts sehen, nichts hören, nichts sagen, die drei weisen Affen in Kunst, Literatur, Medien und Karikaturen (Hear, See and Speak No Evil, the Three Wise Monkeys in Art, Literature, Media and Cartoons) by Wolfgang Mieder, USA. The book is in German but has a 15 page summary in English. The above link will bring you directly to Amazon UK for more details.

Verein

 

Viele Affen stehen in meinem Schrank,

mal dick, mal schlank,

mal groß, mal klein,

alle, aber fein.

 

Sie sind aus Holz, Porzellan,

Keramik oder Stein

und gehören alle

zum gleichen Verein.

 

Sein Motto lautet:

"Nichts Böses über den Menschen berichten".

So - die alten Geschichten,

die man sollte nicht richten.

Hallo,

besten Dank für ihren neusten Eintrag über Gibraltar und die drei Affen. Wir finden ihn sehr interessant und aufschlussreich, denn dadurch konnten wir unsere Eindrücke vom April 2010 vertiefen. Wir waren damals sehr fasziniert, unter anderem auch von der Zutraulichkeit.
