Just found this site while looking to possibly sell my Wise Monkey collection. Moved from a house to small condo and don't have the place to show them all. Would like to communicate with other collectors. Gail, Boston, MA, USA

Three years ago a friend in Washington, DC traveled to Cuba and brought me back a single coconut carved with the Three Monkeys.

He bought it in a flea market there. Speak No Evil has his mouth covered, of course, but the other two are smoking (one a pipe, the other a cigarette or cigar (or joint?)). I keep this set in my condo in Washington, DC, where I don’t have a camera, so I took these photos with my phone.  Some are blurry, but at least you can get the idea.

Monkeys, monkeys in my rooms

Been here so long, they send off fumes

Monkeys, monkeys on my floors

Can't get my vacuum past the doors.

Monkeys, monkeys on my walls

Collecting dirt and spider balls

Monkeys, monkeys on my shelves

Oh how I wish they'd dust themselves

Monkeys, monkeys, what to do?

Get my spouse to collect them too…

Then buy him (or her) a big surprise:

A slew of new cleaning supplies!

“Three-monkey hunting”

In brightest day, in darkest night,

not one No Evil shall escape my sight.

In my desire to get always more,

I relentlessly search in every store.

I scan each shelf from high to low,

should I miss one what a blow.

My house is full, the money gone,

but real collectors are never done!

Yesterday I found two sets of the 3 monkeys at an Estate Sale. I believe them to be old, not sure of origin. The two sets appear to be hand carved from a reddish-brown stone. Both have the three monkeys carved individually and all are hanging down on silk cords, one monkey on top of the next. One set is small, about 9 inches long by 1 inch wide and the other is 16 inches long by about 2 inches wide. The monkeys on the longer cord all have their feet balanced on coconuts and are in very extreme physical positions.  Since they are all holding onto the rope only one hand is used to cover eyes, ears and mouth. Does anyone know anything about this style or have anything similar to these? I can photograph them if there is any interest. Thanks, Karen

Further message:

Thanks for such a quick reply!

While searching for others like the ones I found at the estate sale, I did find some on E-Bay that were made of resin and are new and quite inexpensive. Now I am not sure if mine or stone or not. But they don't seem like plastic (sounds like ceramic or stone when the pieces are clunked together) and the color is not the same on each one and there is much more detail and they look older. The set I found on E-bay are about the size of my small set. Here is a link to them so you can see the style format of the small set.

The big set is really bizarre as I said two of the monkeys are in really funny positions...

Anyway, I will take some photos and send them soon. It has been a while since I have done photo downloading to my computer and reduction in file size so they go by e-mail more easily. But there is no hurry in any case.  Enjoy your travels.

Dear Emil!

I know that you're in summer break. Happy vacation! I therefore do not require any response.

Earlier I mentioned that I prefer the idea of Taoist, than Confucius as the basis of the three monkeys. I found another quote, this time from Liezi. Chapter "Confucius", section 5

http://ctext.org/dictionary.pl?if=en&id=37455

Teacher Liezi 20 years lived next door to the teacher Nan-guo-zi. They do not communicate with each other. When Liezi was asked "why?" he replied: "His eyes do not see anything, his ears do not hear anything, his mouth does not say anything, his attitude never changes. What should I talk to him?"

Taoist ideal is the sage people that should not follow artificially imposed from outside rules, but natural environment, the inexpressible Tao. The sage not see, not hear and not speak.

Hi everybody!

A friend of mine called me tripithecophile, and my hobby tripithecophilia.

It's from Greek tri (τρες) = three + pithekos (πίθηκος) = monkey or ape + philia (φιλία) = fraternal love.

What you think about this name?

Alexey

3 Monkeys Collector?: no longer

Dear Emil

Thank you for the latest Newsletter with interesting news. Above all, the okimono of a monkey trainer drew my interest.

Here are my remarks.

It looks like a netsuke -- well-known miniature sculpture of Japan; originally toggle to hold tobacco pouch, pipe, purse etc attached to kimono. Fine netsuke’s represent Japanese daily life of the times and help in historical investigation.

The figurine in question, however, has a pedestal, therefore not a netsuke but an okimono, as you write. Presumably newly made after a netsuke to allure the monkeys collectors. Pity, you can not tell the period of making.

You write the figurine is a monkey trainer. To be more exact, he is a street performer of monkey show. The show had been quite popular for centuries. In my childhood it still existed, but became extinct in 1950s and one group revived in 1980's.

Monkey players have been looked down as the lowest class--even as untouchables. But surprisingly, known almost to none, the monkey dance had been an annual event (January 6) at the Imperial Palace.

It could not be an entertainment. Surely it was a ritual.

And the one who performed the monkey dance in the presence of the Emperor could not be the street performers. Who, then? My assumption is that he was a religious person related to the Tendai Buddhist sect, who regarded a monkey the messenger of Shinto God, Sannnou, and who spread the Koshin Shinkou, which is deeply related with the three wise monkeys.

Your okimono is valuable, not only as collectors’ item, but also as a material for study.

I have my book on Monkey Players. Illustrations in it might interest you.

Michio

Dear Emil,
thank you for the NEWS. I enclose the picture of three angels as "three wise monkeys". I bought them in Majorca in the souvenir shop.

I wonder whether it deserves to be published in the News.

Best regards,

Yours truly,

Kaz.

Do you have a valuation tool for the various monkeys?  I've been collecting now for several years and did not even know there were others like you out there....

I'd like to put a value on my collection...all small, fit into a shoebox...but many!  :)  Connie

Emil,

Thank you for the link to the latest edition of the newsletter.  I am flattered to be a featured collector.  You have done a very fine job with the entry.

I also really enjoyed the new unique statue of the trainer with the three monkeys (beautiful carving and concept) and the giant hot air balloon.

Excellent job all around!

See you soon,

Gregg
