September 06, 2008 No Evil figurines from Egypt

We are in contact with a researcher in Japan who is studying the hear, see and speak no evil symbol in other cultures. Since there was a special interest for No Evil figurines from Egypt, we have made a separate page with all items of our collection that originate from that country. September 01, 2008 Three Wise Monkeys in Flickr

Earlier this year we wrote about a funny photo-pool in Flickr titled: “Three Wise Monkeys”. It is time to have another look, maybe just to see what has been added meanwhile. August 16, 2008 Flowerparade on Sunday September 7, 2008 in the Netherlands

As announced some time ago, Hear, See and Speak no Evil Monkeys will be featured on one of the flower-decorated carriages of the famous Flowerparade in Zundert in the Netherlands. For the latest photos of the design, click here. The carriage is 60 feet long, 30 feet high and 15 feet wide, so it will be quite impressive. Pictures of the finished carriage will be published in this website as soon as available.

As announced earlier, the program of the Three-Monkeys-Collectors-Day on October 4, 2008 in the Netherlands is ready for publication and all details can now be found in this website. Don’t forget to register as early as possible, so that the organizers Foka & Johan will have an idea with how many people will participate.

July 27, 2008 3-Monkeys Pub in Toronto Canada

During our recent stop in Toronto we had lunch at the 3 Monkeys Pub in Scarborough. We made ourselves known as webmaster of this website and received a very warm welcome. The 3-Monkeys logo is abundant everywhere: wall decorations, on menu cards, on matchboxes etc. A small collection of 3 monkey figurines is displayed behind the bar, mostly donations from customers. The restaurant has been named after the “3 Monkeys Coffee Bar” in Durban, South Africa, which once was owned by a relative.

For three-monkey collectors but also for all others this restaurant certainly is worth a visit. It offers quality restaurant food at pub prices, together with a very friendly service. There also is a “4^th Monkey”: a private meeting room with all audiovisual equipment, for up to 50 people. Maybe this is an idea for the next 3 Monkeys Conference on the North American continent?

July 23, 2008 Mainichi Daily Newspaper in Japan

Early June 2008 we had a visit from a Japanese journalist who was interested in our three-monkeys collection. He wrote about it in his column in the Mainichi Daily Newspaper in Japan. The text you can find by clicking here and there is also a translation in the 3 languages of this website.

July 21, 2008 New Unique No Evils

We received an email about a very interesting No Evil Monkeys figurine that was spotted in Uruguay. This item certainly qualifies as “Unique/Unusual”. Click here to see it and scroll down the page to item UN20.

July 13, 2008 Three-Monkeys-Collectors-Day in Eerbeek, the Netherlands

From Foka & Johan Veen we received a message that the organisation of the Three-Monkeys-Collectors Day on October 4, 2008 in the Netherlands, is well on its way and that more news will follow soon.

July 12, 2008 Ireland – the European Union & the three monkeys

During last month Irish voters rejected the new European “Lisbon” Treaty. One of the posters used in the campaign featured the three no evil monkeys and is now the subject of our Picture of the Month for August 2008. Many thanks to Paul, Jitske, Yvonne, Katsumi Sawada and Heidi Schmid for sending information and/or pictures.

June 03, 2008 The Three Monkeys at the Art 39 in Basel, Switzerland

See our entry of May 24, here below. We just received the following message:

New Delhi and New York dealers Nature Morte/Bose Pacia sold the Subodh Gupta bronze sculpture ``Gandhi's Three Monkeys'' for 850,000 euros, said Delhi-based director Peter Nagy. The monumental 2008 three-piece sculpture, exhibited outside Art Basel's exhibition hall, was one of an edition of three.

June 01, 2008 3 Monkeys Collectors Conference 2008 in Virginia Beach, USA

We received a message from the organizers of the Three-Monkeys-Conference 2008 in Virginia Beach that the number of registrants was not enough to hold the event. Most probably economic factors, like the high price of gas, seem to be the main reason for many not to attend. The meeting has been postponed and more information about place and date will be published in this Newsletter as soon as available.

May 31, 2008 Picture of the Month – June 2008

May 30, 2008 Flowerparade on Sunday September 7, 2008 in Zundert in the Netherlands

Michel van Ostaaijen informed us that during the wellknown Flowerparade in Zundert, the theme of one of the flower-decorated carriages will be Hear, See and Speak no Evil Monkeys. If you want to see a first design model, click here. All carriages will be 60 feet long, 30 feet high and 15 feet wide, so it will be quite an impressive show. May 28, 2008 New collectors portrait, Yvonne Vonk Netherlands

As mentioned on May 18, Yvonne was interviewed by a newspaper about her 3-monkeys collection. We agreed with her to make a collector’s portait based on that story. Click here.

May 26, 2008 “Three Monkeys” at the 2008 Filmfestival in Cannes, France

One of the movies that were presented at this years’ Film Festival in Cannes is titled “Three Monkeys”. Director is Nuri Bilge Ceylan from Turkey. The film, a psychological thriller, is based on the theme: hear, see and speak no evil, but as far as I have seen, it does not show the 3 monkeys in any way. If you want to know more, search in Google or YouTube for “Three Monkeys Nuri Bilge Ceylan”. Or click here for the oficial website of the Film Festival in Cannes. At least what I learnt from this all, that “Üç Maymun“ is Turkish for “3 monkeys”.

May 24, 2008 The Three Monkeys at the Art 39 in Basel, Switzerland

Art 39 Basel calls itself: “The world's premier international art show for Modern and Contemporary works”. The show takes place June 4 – 8, 2008. I was very interested when I read in the announcement that three large sculptures (of over 7 feet high), titled Gandhi's Three Monkeys, 2008 would be on display. When I saw the pictures I thought I was looking at a catalog for personal protective wear or a flyer for an army material dump store. Probably I have no understanding for modern art, but I can comfortably live with that idea. Click here and judge for yourself.

April 02, 2008 The Three-Monkeys-Collectors Day 2008 in the Netherlands

From Foka & Johan Veen we heard, that they are busy with the organisation of the 3-monkeys collectors meeting 2008 in the Netherlands (Saturday October 4, 2008 in Eerbeek). They are looking at an alternative meeting room that would offer more space and more opportunities. Also the day program is being prepared. Lien Wansink has offered assistance for the organisation during the day, what certainly is a great help. If you would like to contribute yourself (for example with a presentation) or if you have other suggestions, just let us know. As you will be aware, the success of a collectors’ meeting also depends on the initiatives of other participants. Click here to contact us.

April 01, 2008 (no joke) Emails to www.three-monkeys.info

Our Internet Service Provider recently has installed new software to better block unwanted emails (spam- or junkmail). According to their and also our statistics, about 98% of incoming emails are unwanted and it was absolutely necessary to improve the existing filtering system. Although the new filter is the latest state-of-the-art software, it still can happen, that a “wanted” email gets lost.

Since we always respond to every serious email message, we ask you to resend it, in case you have not heard from us after a few days.

March 31, 2008 Three-Monkeys.Info is one year old

About one year ago we started www.three-monkeys.info and it is maybe time for some statistics (if only to please the webmaster). In the past 12 months we have had approx. 30’000 visitors, which means an average of about 80 per day. About 10’000 of them came through the “front door”, others through bookmarked pages, but also many visitors came through search engines, especially Google. The most popular search words are “three monkeys”, “drei Affen” and “horen, zien en zwijgen”, but that is not very surprising. A record was on November 2, 2007 with 368 visitors in one single day. In the list where visitors come from, are more than 80 countries.

Many thanks to all visitors and especially to those who have sent us interesting information and pictures to be published.

March 23, 2008 New Collector’s Portrait Annelies van den Bergh, Holland

Many “internetyears” ago, Annelies van den Bergh was the first of the No Evil Collectors in Holland to discover eBay. She informed other members and also showed how to search and bid. It opened an entire new world, because through eBay we came into contact with many No Evil collectors all over the world. March 22, 2008 New pages with No Evil Collectibles

Recently we received a very special No Evil figurine with three hear-see-speak Bernhardiner dogs. Yes, these are the famous Swiss dogs that go out with a small liquor barrel around their neck to rescue and comfort people that have gotten into problems in the mountains. This very nice gift was an excellent motivation to create a webpage with hear-see-speak-no-evil dogs. And while we were working at it, we also created webpages with no evil cats and no evil cows. Just click on the blue underlined texts and enjoy.

Not all visitors to this website may know, that we have a webpage with incomplete No Evil sets.

It has happened to many of us: we bought (or received) a trio of No Evils, that consisted of 2 pcs “hear no” and 1 pce “see no”. Many other and equally unfortunate combinations are of course possible. Or that one of the three No Evils in a shipment arrived broken. Now here is a chance to find that missing piece, or to make someone else happy. Advertising on this page is free. Just send us a picture and information.

March 09, 2008 Telephone cards (calling cards) with hear, see and speak no evil

Phonecards have been collected worldwide since the mid 1970's and peaked in the mid 1990s. At its height, over 2 million people collected phonecards. The hobby has been in decline during the past years, due to the fact that more and more telecom companies cease to supply phonecards. A number of phonecards have been issued with hear-see-speak-no-evil pictures. Click here to see a selection.

About a month ago I came into contact with Michel (see my message of February 7). Since that time we have been exchanging information about the no evil monkeys and about the internet. February 07, 2008 More No Evil Collectors

Recently I came into contact with Jeanne in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, who has a very nice collection of No Evils and who has sent me several pictures. A few days ago I received an email from Michel in Etten-Leur, also in the Netherlands, who collects the 3 monkeys since the 80’s. Michel recently has put pictures of his collection on the internet and you can see his weblog by clicking here (in Dutch language). Jeanne and Michel, both of you are very welcome in our group and we hope to meet with you on the Three-Monkeys collectors day 2008 in Eerbeek.

January 17, 2008 No Evil Poetry & Lyrics

If you haven’t looked at it for some time, the section No Evil Poetry & Lyrics really is worthwhile viewing. Quite a number of texts have been added and we are now at over 60 in six different languages. Some texts are very confused, some use rude language and others are quite political, but that is also part of life.

January 13, 2008 Childrens’ Carnival Parade in Eindhoven, the Netherlands

Not very exciting for those who live outside of the Netherlands or Belgium, but the Children Carnival Parade in Eindhoven on February 3, 2008 is titled “Hear, See and Speak No Evil”. We hope to be able to show some pictures later.

January 11, 2008 Video Clips

During the past year we have started to collect “No Evil” Video Clips; Short films that, for a variety of reasons, have something to do with hear, see and speak no evil. It is amazing what is around on the internet. Visits to Nikko Japan, more or less serious commercials/animations, but also pure nonsense made by people that are obviously bored and just have taken some silly shots. However, what becomes clear is, that a huge number of people from all over the world know the hear, see and speak no evil symbol. A word of warning for those who want to view it all, there are some clips that are a bit boring. In some cases we have mentioned at which position of the counter the No Evil symbol appears. Enjoy.
