Thank you for your message about
netsuke depicting sarumawashi--monkey player. In
short, there were two groups of monkey players. One: the poor who made his living
by selling monkeys' performance as a show. Another: religious person who drove
out evil spirits by the power of the monkeys--messenger of the Sannou God. Though not widely known, the
ceremonial monkey dance annually took place in the emperor's presence on the
New Year days. This is the fact behind the popularity of the three monkeys in

I collect
three wise monkeys. I've been at it for about thirty years. I do not collect
with aggression. If a set crosses my 'path of life' and tickles my interest I
may negotiate for the purchase. Many sets have been gifted to me!! Well, as
chance would have it, while noodling around on the internet a few years ago I
stumble upon a site managed by Emil Schuttenhelm from his home in Europe. He
publishes an online newsletter that is sent to collectors over the world
addressing topics of interest to collectors including, submissions from the
subscribing collectors. In addition, each he organizes ‘get-togethers’ of
collectors in many different countries. Its lots of fun. I have included
below a few links of my participation that you might enjoy! One to the most
