Story:

image002  I have inherited two 3-monkey sets. One is a 'Yorkshire say nowt version' 2 inches tall, good detail stamped on the back ANVERS. The other is solid 2cms tall standard version with less detail. I also would like to know how to clean them as the bigger set has white marks on them. Thank you so much for your help.  Pauline

Valuation:

image002  Hello Pauline,

Thank you for the photos. Both 3-monkey sets are made of brass and were manufactured between 1930 and 1940 by Pearson-Page-Jewsbury, Birmingham. This company has later become known as Peerage.

You are a good observer, because the larger set represents indeed “Hear all, See all, Say Nowt”. Most people won’t notice.

What is unusual is the engraving “Anvers”. It is the French name for the city of Antwerp in Belgium. It must have been sold as a souvenir item. However, being familiar with the language battle in Belgium (between the Dutch/Flemish- and the French speaking groups), it seems quite strange that in Dutch/Flemish Antwerp a souvenir was offered with a French text. It makes the item interesting.

About the smaller item not much more is to be said. If you wish to clean these monkeys at all, you can best use a fluid copper polish. For cleaning such items I use an old toothbrush that is going to be thrown away anyway.

Both items have been produced in large quantities and are quite common. Both are very frequently offered for sale and can be found in almost every 3-monkey collection. I am convinced that when you search for “3 monkeys”, “three monkeys” or “wise monkeys” in Ebay.UK you will find several of these items being auctioned at any time. Prices range from UK$ 1 -10.  I hope you are not too disappointed now.

You may have heard that when you own three things of the same kind, you are considered to be a collector. So get yourself a third one and you are very welcome in the international group of three-monkey collectors.

I hope that this information is useful to you and if you have more questions about the three monkeys, please let us know or visit our Questions and Answers page: http://www.three-monkeys.info/1/ORIGIN/FAQENG.htm

It would be nice if you can let me have a message that this email has been received.

Comments from readers:

image002  Thank you very much for the information.  The ANVERS on the back interested me as several items in brass are being sold on ebay (ie a bell) and the sellers imply ANVERS is the maker.
