Story:

I have an ashtray similar to UN04. Its about 3 ins tall has cigarette rests between each monkey and a well for ash in the centre. Metal, could be brass. I have had it many, many years possibly bought from a stall in London in the 70s. Never seen any others not even on your web site. Any ideas about origin?

Valuation:

Your three-monkey ashtray is most likely of Japanese origin and was probably originally purchased in one of the many souvenir shops in Nikko, Japan. That was and is the best place in Japan for this kind of three-monkey items. My educated guess is that it is about 40-50 years old.

In the present economic situation it is very difficult to give a price indication. It obviously is an item that most likely will only be sought after by collectors of three-monkeys or ashtrays. To give you an idea, I would see this item in the UK£ 10 – 20 range. But if offered in an internet auction and you are lucky enough that two bidders start fighting over it, it could go higher.
