Story:

image002  I have a three wise monkey’s figurine that was given to me by my father shortly before he passed away two years ago.  I don't know anything about it other than the assumption that he picked it up at an estate sale as he frequented them quite often.  There was a handwritten note on the bottom attached with a piece of tape that said it was given to someone by their neighbor (we have no idea who that could be). The note also said it is very old.  I do believe it is very old.  It appears to have been hand carved from marble.  It definitely is not carved from bone.  If it is not marble I am sure it is some other type of stone.  It is heavy for its size.  The dimensions are 2 and 7/16 inches long, 2 inches high and 1 inch wide.  There are no markings on the piece.  Unfortunately the arm of the monkey on the right must have been broken at some time.   I would like to have an idea of when and where it may have been carved and if it has any value.  I would be interested in selling it to a collector.  I will be forwarding several pictures to you.  Thank you.  Wendy Noel

Valuation:

image002  Hello Wendy, thank you for the picture.

The monkeys are made of soapstone, a material that is relatively easy to carve. They most probably originate from India, although similar items have also been produced in an area of China, close to the border to India. Such monkeys have been produced over a longer period of time, most probably already from before World War 2.

These soapstone monkeys have been produced in large quantities and are quite common. Similar sets are frequently offered in EBay and do not get high bids. Mostly under US$ 10. Unfortunately your item is damaged, which does not add to its value. I hope you are not too much disappointed.

One of the collections for sale in our website includes several soapstone items. If you want to have a look, click on this link: http://www.three-monkeys.info/COLLSALE/ and check collection #05

Please give me a short message, so that I will know that you have received this email.

Best regards,

Emil Schuttenhelm

Comments from readers:

image002  Hello Emil,

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide me with some background on the three monkeys.  Until I did a little research on the internet I didn't know anything about the three monkeys or even that there are groups of collectors.  Even though the little figurine isn't worth anything, I did learn something about them which is very interesting.

Thanks again.  You are very kind.

Wendy
