Story:

I would like to have my 3 monkeys appraised. They were my mothers so they are quite old. She came from Pennsylvania. Unfortunately she never said how she received them or anything about them. The largest one is 1 5/8" tall and 1 1/4" front to back at the base. I think they are soapstone. I know nothing about them and was quite interested in your site. Very interesting. Hello Letty, thank you for the pictures and the additional information.

The monkeys are indeed made of soapstone, a material that is easy to carve. They most probably originate from India, although similar items have also been produced in an area of China, close to the border with India. Such monkeys have been produced over a longer period of time, most probably already from before World War 2. Unfortunately the set is mixed together, because the one monkey has a different color, which is not original. The value is not very high. Similar sets or also single pieces are frequently offered in EBay and do not get high bids. Mostly under US$ 10. I hope you are not too much disappointed.
