Story:

image002  I would like to arrange to have someone look at a 3 monkeys that I inherited. The piece is 5 7/8” tall. The widest part of the base is 2 1/16” across. The widest part of the top is 1 15/16” across.I was told the material is bone. The history is as follows.  My aunt, who was born in 1899, was the owner.  My mom, who was born in 1919 (and just turned 102!) remembers it from a very long time ago.  I remember visiting my aunt in the early 1960’s and seeing it on her end table. My cousin inherited it in the 1970’s.  My cousin just passed away and it was given to me. As an aside, my parents collected the 3-monkeys for many years and I now have their collection, which numbers about 150.  So I’m thrilled to have added this one to the collection.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Valuation:

Hello Nancy, Here is the information we can give you about your three-monkey item. On October 2019 we have featured a very similar item in our website. Here is a link. As you can see it is of Japanese origin. The material of your item is definitely bone. Remarkable is that your three monkey item is very white; especially considering its age. Usually bone tends to turn darker over the years. We do not assume that you have bleached it? What is also interesting is that your item does not show any scrimshaw. Most bone and ivory artifacts from Japan have scrimshaw, as you can see on the item in our website. Also interesting, but not relevant is that both items have a “Greek type” meander decoration around the top, which is quite unusual. Meander decorations are used in Japanese artifacts but usually look quite different. Your item dates back to the Japanese Meiji Period (1868 – 1912) and is thus considered to be antique (over 100 years old). Congratulations with such a nice item. It certainly must be a centerpiece of your collection.

Correspondance:

Thank you for your quick response.  It’s really interesting to learn more about it.  And I am so surprised to see a similar one from a previous newsletter.   I have no idea how my aunt every got this piece, and there is nobody left who can tell me more.  My aunt lived in Racine, Wisconsin, a mid-western town, and never really traveled...so it’s anyone’s guess. Thanks so much for all of the information. Stay well. Nancy
