Story:

I enjoyed looking at your website. Could you please give me an idea of where my 3 monkeys were made, how old they are and value?

I think they are brass or bronze and test nonferrous with a magnet.

The monkeys without stand vary from 69mm to 72mm in height, 31 to 35mm across width and 25mm deep. They weigh 249g, 278g and 286g so all different. Hear no evil has some small patches of gilt but mostly rubbed off now.

I think the wooden stand might be oak but has a mahogany deep stain left on the base and under the monkies. The rest has faded to a mid oak colour

Valuation:

Thank you for visiting my website and for sending the photos.

Although I have seen quite similar figurines, I have not seen your monkeys before.

However, based on my more than 40 years of experience, I feel confident to say that your monkeys originate from the Far East, most probably Thailand or maybe Vietnam.

They could be between 50 and 100 years old.

The value is the most difficult part. The problem is the lack of buyers. The old generation of collectors is fading away and there is no new generation. Collecting in general is not “in”.

Although your monkeys are rare, they are probably not attractive enough for non-collectors, people that buy just one set of figurines for the fun of it.

This is the best answer I can give you, but if you have more questions, please let me know.

Correspondance:

Thank you for your quick reply and for your advice. They are not the most attractive monkies but I like them for their patina and age. It is nice to find a vintage antique set. I live in Norfolk UK.

I bought them in a collection of 24 monkeys. It is great fun trying to figure out where monkies come from! Kindest Regards,
