Story:

Hi!! I recently acquired my mother's collections, and there were a couple of the wise monkey sets. One in particular is verrrrry interesting, and I have never seen another like it. The dimensions are 2-1/2" tall, and 3" long. Please tell me a bit more about them and what they might be worth.

Valuation:

it really is an unusual item. In my more than 40 years of collecting the three monkeys I have never seen this No Evil representation before.

First of all, the fact that it is marked “made in Japan” indicates that this item has been produced for export, because otherwise an item would have /Japanese/Chinese characters only (if any).

The three monkeys (persons) of this figurine are definitively not Japanese and I assume that this statue is intended as a kind of parody on foreigners. But the deeper meaning will probably never be known. The figurine is made of ceramic material, but not very nicely made and the condition of the item is best described as “reasonable”. Although the item is a curiosity, it does not represent a high value, also because of its condition. Most collectors won’t recognize this item as a specialty.

I don’t know what your plans are, but I would like to suggest that you keep this item for yourself. It will always remind you with a smile, that your mother was so lucky to find such an unusual 3-monkey item. Please let me know whether you have any further questions.
