Story:

image002 I have 3 monkeys I bought at a thrift store. They are unusual and I haven't seen others like them. The manager of the store said they were brought in by an older woman along with a number of antiques she wanted to donate to the store. My dad collected the 3 monkeys and I just couldn't resist them. They are each about 3 1/2 to 4 pounds and about 9 inches tall. They are ceramic but almost look like metal. I was looking at them again last night and wondered if they might be majolica? However, the glaze definitely looks sort of like bronze or metallic. I just don't have a clue

Thanks for any help.

Valuation:

image002 Thank you very much for the photos. I know this set of monkeys and have them in my collection. I bought them about 20 years ago in Switzerland. The material is indeed majolica. To the best of my knowledge, the origin is most probably China.

You may be interested to know that the same set of monkeys was standing in the Swiss home of late Charlie Chaplin near Montreux. This was confirmed to me by a photographer/journalist who had access to that home. Now there is a Charlie Chaplin Museum in that building, but I do not know whether the 3 monkeys are still there.

Hope this information is useful to you.

Correspondance:

Thank you for the information. That is interesting to know and I appreciate it. Would you have any estimate of the value?

Reply: Since a number of years the hype of collecting the three monkeys is over. At this moment, there are more sellers than buyers and unfortunately the price level is accordingly.

I think that anything between US$ 100 and US$ 200 would be a fair price.

Hope that is of any help.
