Story:

image002 I am not an avid collector. However, I do have a few items with the See No Evil monkeys. My most recent acquisition, a vase, is the one most interesting to me. It is embossed with the three monkeys and a bud (lotus?). I sense that it may be very old. As far as I can see, it has no mark. The bottom is copper and the rest is either brass or bronze (looks blackish inside) The No Evil vase appears to me to be Asian. It is 6 (six) inches high, 8 (eight) inches around at the mouth and around the rim of the foot. It is 16 (sixteen) inches around at the widest point. It weighs 24 (twenty-four) oz. There are three notches at equal spaces on the foot of the vase. I don't recognize any other marks, perhaps one small mark on the bottom and some scratches. It appears to be brass or bronze on the outside and copper on the bottom and inside it seems blackish. There is a small hole, which appears to be from age, on the outside near the base where the foot attaches. It doesn't go all the way through.  The monkey figures are embossed.. I purchased it at a thrift store. Thank you for any help as to its origins.

Valuation:

image002 I am quite confident that this vase originates from Japan. What is unusual in this case, is that the monkey closes only one eye and with one hand. This probably is a playful variation by the artist.I am happy that you did not ask for a price valuation (yet).

This definitely is a rare item, but you will only get a high price if you can find two people bidding against each other.

Correspondance:

image002 Thank you so much. I am grateful for the information. When I first saw the vase, I immediately felt that it was old. And looking closely made me think more so.  And I have wondered at its worth, and yet that is not the most important aspect. I like the message the vase carries.   I think perhaps the tide has turned for so many, with regard to big spending...  I wonder what period it is from. I will do some further research, but in the meanwhile, I will place it where I can best remember the message!
